This Road
This Road
What kind of road is this? A long and straight road that seems to have no end. This road, even though its straight, for some reason, we could see a much more luxurious path which deviate from the straight path. Those paths offer no boundaries, allowing their followers to do as they will and give them “pleasure” and “happiness” the easy and unsophisticated way. All for the fulfilment of one’s desires. Those deviated roads are nothing more than an illusion and so do all the pleasures that they lead to. Similar to a little sip of sweet tea that doesn’t last long. That is the temporary “feel” this dunya offers. The constant need to fulfil one desire after another until the orientation of life is just the consumption of this dunya. Just a little turn and it’s hard to come back, except for those who have the will of iron and under the guidance of Allah Ta’ala.
What about the straight road? The road that leads to Allah? It is a long bumpy –if not thorny –road. In this road you stumble and fall. Thorns will stab you physically and mentally. You will have to face excruciating heat of the bright sun. Doubts on this long journey will shower over your head and try to mislead you. Many will mock, accuse, and even try to kill you. All we get in this road is pain, stress, and dire temptations.
But wait a minute…those are from what we see. Have we accounted on what might be seen in the eyes of Allah? Have news been sent to your human ears about the story of Ayyub AS? When he had to face severe sickness until one of his wives couldn’t bare it and left him? What about the story of prophet Muhammad SAW? He faced countless insults from poor to rich people, a number of assassination attempts, and other trials which can be read easily in this modern era. Those two were the messengers of Allah yet they had to face such trials.
Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe" and they will not be tried? (QS Al-Ankabut 29:2)
This ayah explains that if we want iman, we ought to face difficult times, suffer from trials, and always be obedient. For a muslim, the weapon to face those upcoming difficulties are sabr. We have to be patient and seek refuge only to Allah SWT. In those difficult times that Allah has prepared for us, we have to stand firm and hold on to Him. In this case, we have to stand strong and keep on walking on this road. This straight road doesn’t only give you trials, for it will also grow your iman and develop special bonds between you and Allah and the other people who follow this road.
Just like the pleasure of this dunya, the trials from Allah in this world is temporary. It will come and go again continuously until our limited time in this dunya runs out. So, my brothers and sisters who walk on this road, prepare yourself for what comes tomorrow and fear not, for this is the road of da’wah. The path of Rasulullah SAW. The path in which our goal is to meet Allah SWT in the next life, the eternal life.
Whoever should hope for the meeting with Allah - indeed, the term decreed by Allah is coming. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (QS Al-Ankabut 29:5)
